New East is a non-governmental organization which was founded in 2016 in Daugavpils, Latvia to work for new education, engaged citizens and positive change. Our main priorities are the development and access to new education in Eastern Europe, the promotion of public participation and positive change that helps develop the cultural landscape of the region. The organization's work extends beyond the region and the country, developing four areas - non-governmental culture, non-formal education, media space and community engagement programs. We work on an educational program for positive changes in the Eastern Europe cultural space. The program is based on the formation of new values, non-formal learning opportunities and the presentation of successful examples of development. New East is a non-state cultural and educational program based on an interdisciplinary approach to solving local problems, involving the potential of residents to adapt the cultural code of the environment. This is an opportunity for the development of human capital and the creative environment. Our projects are aimed at developing media literacy, critical thinking, creative industries, integration processes and a non-governmental cultural environment. New East is a non-governmental organization, whose objectives are: > support non formal education in Eastern Europe, volunteering in the local and international level > be a free platform for discussion and reflection on important topics for our society ( topics like humiliation in society, natural pollution, healthy lifestyle, freedom of speech, intercultural dialog, social media, media, journalism, politic activities, culture identity, education etc.) > to develop leisure time possibilities for our society, create informative space for different groups of society, to improve and harmonize initiative and spread examples of good practice in society, which could promote active involvement of children, youth and adults in more democratic society building, to popularize and actively use non-formal education methods in work with youth (X and Y generations), as well as identify cultural significance and the value of modern people’s life > creating and developing programs focused on social positive change, interaction, and inclusion. Since 2017, we have begun organizing small educational programs on media literacy and journalism, as well as entrepreneurship and youth work. Over time, the format has evolved and expanded. This is how our international educational programs were formed - Media Lab and Mediathon (international media literacy and civic journalism acceleration programs), Business Lab (youth business acceleration program). As well as special programs for educators throughout Europe. All programs imply the development of critical thinking and analysis skills, provide an opportunity to gain knowledge in an informal environment from leading experts (journalists, marketers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, content creators, etc.), and most importantly, each program is full of a practical part, in which participants are given the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in reality. Taken together, theoretical knowledge and practical work helps to truly understand how different areas work, to increase competence, gain experience and develop skills that will be useful and relevant to the younger generation. In total, we have organized more than 30 educational programs on journalism, media literacy, critical and business thinking, and soft skills Five years ago we began our joint cooperation with the amateur Theater and independent theater communities, actors and directors from various countries in Europe. Every year we organize workshops for local theater groups, inviting professional and young directors. This makes it possible to increase competence, acquire new knowledge, develop existing acting, directing skills and creative experience. Together we create theatrical performances, plays and community theater festivals. Each time, young people participating in the program choose exciting topics that are relevant for themselves and society, and the theatrical format makes it possible to openly reflect, while leaving the artistic value of the action. We also launched the Solomon Theater Program in 2022. Four theater incubators were created all over Latvia, in which young actors worked with professional directors to create their own performances and productions on important, acute and problematic topics for young people (freedom, war, adaptation, women's rights, de-discrimination, mental health, etc.). Plays and performances were presented at the festival, which took place in Daugavpils. From the field of culture in 2021 we started to organize an urban orientation game Hi!Story. Our task is to tell about the unknown and very different history of the city, region, and country. During the quest, the goal of the participants is not only to find an object located on the map and get to it but also to answer questions, complete tasks that are most often related to culture and history, for each completed task and the correct answer, participants receive points. During the game, participants in a game form learn facts about culture, historical events, traditions, art and great people, who contributed to the development of the region, country, Europe, and the world. We also have extensive experience in programs related to media products. Our media projects are aimed at developing civic and independent journalism, at creating a new, positive, diverse and objective agenda. In our projects we use video, audio and text formats, creating live broadcasts on social networks, podcasts, videos and articles, telling about interesting people, new projects, culture, youth initiatives, modern entrepreneurs, positive experiences, etc. To date, we have attracted more than 50 young beginner and professional journalists from the Baltic countries, Poland, Belarus and Portugal, have already created more than 100 video, audio and text materials, creating materials in Russian and Latvian. coverage 150,000 coverage in social networks. We also care about the quality of our audiovisual materials: we increase the number of professional equipment, adapt to modern digital formats and cooperate with professional operators and sound specialists.
